Wikipedia, the free open under the auspices of
the Wikimedia Foundation, get a lot of funds from many parties to cover
all of their operating costs. One of the help that comes is from Google co-founder Sergey Brin.
Sergey Brin and his wife, Anne Wojcicki, has a foundation named The Brin Wojcicki Foundation. Through
this Foundation, Brin and his wife grant funds amounting to 500,000 US
dollars (about Usd 4.5 billion) to the Wikimedia Foundation. These
funds will be used for operational activities, such as the maintenance
of Wikipedia servers, bandwidth management, as well as the salaries of
employees.
In the second half of
November 2011, the Wikimedia Foundation is again rolling out fundraising
for Wikipedia and other websites that they manage. This annual fundraising has started eight years ago. By 2011, fundraising on the first day had managed to collect 1.2 million US dollars. One of the charities that were announced are Sergey Brin.
"This is about how people use our services and help pay the cost of the operation together. We
want to make Wikipedia as the Commons so Wikipedia could become
something useful for themselves and for others around the world. I
am grateful to Sergey Brin and Anne Wojcicki over support for what we
did, "said Sue Gardner, Executive Director of the Wikimedia Foundation.
According
to data from comScore, in October 2011, the current reach of Wikipedia
visitors 477 million unique visitors from all over the world. This is the place of Wikipedia as a web site is the fifth most visited websites in the world. Even so, the Wikimedia Foundation does not ever intend to make this website as the commercial by placing ads.
In
addition to Wikipedia, Brin Wojcicki Foundation has contributed funds
for the Michael j. Fox Foundation, which conducts research on
parkinson's disease. In addition, the Foundation
has also provided funds to the Electronics Frontier Foundation, a group
which is fighting for human rights in the digital world.
